From URL to Machine Name

Today I needed to know the machine name for the machine hosting the pre-live intranet site. To do this with out bothering the network guys was simple.

Step 1: ping the url
e.g. ping pre-stage.acme.com
and you will get this sort of output
Reply from 10.12.156.35: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=61

Step 2: Next take the IP address and get the machine name using nslookup

e.g. nslookup 10.12.156.35
this will give
Name: mx43.acme.com
Address : 10.12.156.35

Where in my organisation mx43 is the machine name. Job done without any moaning from the network team.
